36. INSPECTION OF CAL. .30, M2
TRIPOD MOUNT.
* * * * * * *
i. (Added.) A new traversing bar assembly is now being provided
for the cal. .30 tripod mount M2. It consists of a traversing bar, traversing
bar screw, and a jam nut. The latter two components are assembled to the right
end of the bar (fig. 118.1). This new bar can be adjusted to provide proper
tension to the two rear legs forcing them against sides of the tripod head,
lending rigidity and support to the mount as a unit. |

(1) To assemble the new traversing bar to the tripod,
first attach the left end of the bar to the sleeve on the left leg. Then unscrew
the traversing bar screw a few turns and attach to the sleeve of the right
leg. Spread the legs. Then force the sleeve into engagement with the latch,
by applying pressure to the traversing bar adjacent to the sleeve, until securely
latched (fig. 118.2).

(2) If the bar is properly adjusted, the top sides
of the rear legs should be against the sides of the tripod head, making the
mount very rigid (fig. 118.2). When adjusted properly, considerable pressure
is required to latch the sleeve. If this adjustment has not been reached,
continue adjustment of the traversing bar screw until the top sides of the
legs are in definite contact with the tripod head, the mount is very rigid,
and considerable force is required to latch the sleeve.
(3) When the adjustment is correct, tighten the jam nut
against the traversing bar and stake the nut adjacent to the notch in the
traversing bar (fig. 118.2).
(4) When the sleeve is forced against its upper stop and
engaged by the sleeve latch, it will provide tension on the latch eliminating
the possibility of its becoming loose.
